Teaching Statement:
The primary task of any teacher is to help students cultivate the “habit” of thinking creatively, particularly in the visual arts. In the design of my courses I:

• Teach in a way that encourages intellectual growth, creative problem solving, and professional follow-through.

• Design a class structure that includes projects that strive to reach each students’ learning style and level. Not all students share the same background nor do they learn in the same way.

• Present clear content objectives and expected competencies, while simultaneously encouraging creativity and allowing for an individual creative approach to any given assignment.

• Establish clear communication with students concerning grading standards, making clear the steps needed for academic success, and giving individual written feedback via grading rubrics and email conversations.

• Give students the knowledge to be competitive in the professional arena by striving to stay current, myself, in the appropriate software and hardware, and continuing to develop my own artistic practice outside of the classroom.

•  Realize that there is more than one path to success and more than one solution to each challenge. The journey along the path of learning can often be more important for a student than the final outcome of one particular project.
