Acting/Directing Concentration

Within Franklin Pierce University’s award-winning Theatre Program, the concentration in Acting/Directing provides a thorough grounding in the principles of theatrical performance.  The curriculum is based on the premise that performance is essential for a full understanding of the art form. You will be trained to explore an aspect of performance (acting/directing or playwriting) intensively through acting and directing studio classes and through your work in rehearsals and performances. Our faculty is committed to the value of hands-on, active learning, and you will be encouraged to become involved in many aspects of theatre production from your very first semester.  You will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of approaches to conceiving, making, and realizing work as you explore a rich and creative art form mentored by our diverse faculty and guest artists.

At Franklin Pierce you can choose from several ways to pursue your interest in Theatre Acting/Directing:

• through the Acting/Directing concentration within the Theatre major
• through a Theatre minor
• through elective theatre courses
• through co-curricular involvement in productions either on stage or as technical staff

With any of these approaches you will find opportunities to engage actively in the process of making theatre, whether you are interested in being an actor on the stage or learning to design and direct the work of other actors. Our yearly performance schedule includes a faculty or guest-directed play in the fall, a dance concert in the winter, and a musical in the spring as well as student designed and directed productions throughout the year. You may also choose to participate in a Study Abroad experience. Recent semester-long, programs have taken theatre students to Vienna, Austria, with a program in Athens, Greece in summer 2010.

Franklin Pierce is a member of the American College Theatre Festival Association, and our productions have regularly been honored to be chosen for performance at regional festivals. In 2003 Professor Robert Lawson’s original musical …but the rain is full of ghosts was chosen for presentation at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Additionally, our students also have the opportunity to participate in internships at regional professional theaters, such as The Peterborough Players.

Through its commitment to small classes and individual attention, the Franklin Pierce Theatre Program gives emerging performers and artists a thorough grounding in technical skills while at the same time challenging and expanding their understanding of the creative and expressive possibilities of the theatre art form.
