Unrestricted gifts can be used wherever the need is greatest. This gives Franklin Pierce the flexibility to respond to urgent situations as they arise. For example, if traditional sources of funding are not available for lab supplies one year, unrestricted gifts can fill in the gap. Unrestricted gifts ensure that Franklin Pierce can provide essential programs and services regardless of the economic climate or the funding cycles of private foundations or government grants.

Long-term appreciated securities can be used to make a gift to the University, thus avoiding capital gains tax on the securities that would result if the same stock was sold and you gave the proceeds to the University. A donor is entitled to a charitable tax deduction equal to the value of the securities on the date of transfer to Franklin Pierce.

Stock is best transferred to the University, and not sold by the donor.
