Presentation Title: "DNA Extraction and Identification using 16S RNA of Bacteria Found in Franklin Pierce University Compost"

Abstract:

Bacteria are prokaryote single-celled, microscopic organisms. They are one of life's most prominent life forms. Bacteria are particularly important in decomposing organic material, making them a crucial decomposer in compost. In this study, I collected bacteria from a compost pile at Franklin Pierce University, isolated them, and grew them up for DNA extraction using various tools such as an incubator, PCR, and gel electrophoresis. Three bacterial colonies were isolated and identified in this study. All bacteria have 16S rRNA, a highly conserved gene used for bacterial identification. This gene is specifically extracted to be sent off to Dartmouth College for bacterial identification. This process is commonly used by scientists to identify bacteria, reducing the otherwise much more tedious identification process. In this study, we identified all three bacteria as…..
