Presentation Title: "Celebrity Mental Health Advocacy: Jarren Duran"

Abstract:

Jarren Duran, an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, recently has become a focal point of discussion for mental health advocacy. This research project aims to explore the themes of abnormal psychology and the societal response in relation to Jarren Duran's mental health challenges. In a documentary about the 2024 Boston Red Sox season Duran opened up about his mental health and his suicide attempt. Duran is a former top prospect for the Red Sox and his path to the major leagues was met with high expectations from the team and himself. Before he was the 2024 All-Star Game MVP, he was known for giving up on a flyballs and trying to fight fans in the stands. After keeping all of his issues and struggles inside, he opened up to his teammates and the public about his struggles. That season he would go on to finish 8th in MVP voting and win the All-Star Game MVP. He was also raising money for mental health organizations and starting conversations regarding mental health in athletes. This presentation will focus on the impact Duran has had on the mental health field and how he has inspired countless others to share their stories.
