Presentation Title: "Decarcerating America: The Mass Incarceration Project"

Abstract:

The United States has the largest number of prisoners in the world, with nearly two million citizens currently incarcerated. Mass incarceration causes substantial social, psychological, and financial damage to our communities. However, widespread misconceptions regarding offending and incarceration often impede our understanding and obstruct the development of effective solutions. The "Mass Incarceration Project" offered students from Franklin Pierce University’s Corrections class the opportunity to share their perspectives on addressing this pressing social issue. The students identified a fundamental cause of mass incarceration to address through a transformative approach and developed an action plan aimed at achieving meaningful change. The objectives of this project were not only to enhance students’ understanding of the social challenges associated with mass incarceration but also to foster their civic awareness and empower them to see themselves as agents of change.
