Presentation Title: "Documentary Filmmaking: How to Make Them and Why They Matter"

Abstract:

Documentary filmmaking encompasses a large breath of topics. It's a form of filmmaking with one of the lowest barriers to entry but poses its own unique challenges. And it's a form of storytelling that can engage and bring attention to smaller, local stories that usually wouldn't get that attention without it. This presentation will discuss the process of documentary filmmaking, ways to do so yourself, common things to consider while making a film, as well as, challenges in documentary filmmaking and the common problems of the medium. And it will discuss the benefits of the democratization of filmmaking through new technology that makes it easier and cheaper to produce high quality films and the current issues in the distribution landscape for documentaries and pitfalls that can appear after they're completed. Finally, the presentation will look at a wide swatch of documentaries, examining they're real world value and why the medium matters.
