Presentation Title: "Franklin Pierce Athletics: Energy System Utilization Explained"
Abstract:
Collegiate sports have a broad spectrum of energy systems. There are three primary
energy systems in the human body, the ATP-PC system, Glycolysis, and Oxidative Phosphorylation.
Dependent on sport, each energy system is used and utilized in different variations.
These systems allow for the production of adenosine triphosphate(ATP).
The ATP-PC System is used during high intensity training that involves short, powerful
movements. The system uses stored ATP, and phosphocreatine that is within the muscle
to generate energy. Glycolysis is typically utilized during short anaerobic, high
intensity, exercise that lasts roughly 3 minutes. The system breaks down glucose and
muscle glycogen stores to produce ATP. Oxidative phosphorylation is used during prolonged
activity of exercise. This energy system takes place in the mitochondria and is the
final stage during cellular respiration. This system uses oxygen to change ADP into
ATP. This system also uses electron carriers to transport hydrogen within the membrane
to create ATP and H20 (water).
Understanding these energy pathways can help athletes optimize their training. Finding
specific needs can help them to increase sport performance, on the field, and in the
weight room. This is distinguishing what sports are utilizing what energy pathways
at Franklin Pierce Universities Division II Athletics.
