Presentation Title: "Hamlet's Depression: A Psychopharmacological Perspective"

Abstract:

This cross-sectional analysis reviewed Hamlet through a literary and a psychopharmacological lens. Passages from the text were inspected to display Hamlet’s signs of distress, and other characters’ observations. Modern neuroscience was then introduced, showing physical changes in the brain caused by depression and providing possible explanations for changes in behavior and personality. These concepts were applied together, and the resulting information was used to suggest a diagnosis as well as develop a treatment plan. The story was reimagined as if Hamlet received successful treatment, considering the potential for changes in decision making or relationship growth, ultimately altering the direction of the story. Potential limiting factors such as early views on mental health, or the character’s openness to treatment were addressed. Future research could further this connection to include comorbid psychological conditions in Hamlet, contrast conditions and their presentation in other characters, or expand on the changes in brain structure throughout depression.
