Presentation Title: "Historiographical Approaches Regarding the Study of the Black Power Movement"

Abstract:

This research paper explores how the Black Power Movement and Black Panther Party have been studied over the past 80 years. Viewed as controversial, the historiography of the Black Power Movement and Black Panther Party within academia has been extremely limited. This paper argues that the historiography of the Black Power Movement and Black Panther Party should be expanded. To make this point, three journal articles written from gendered, political, and social interpretations were analyzed. In addition to the arguments made by each author, their historiographical methods were studied as well. Between the three authors, comparative and intersectional analysis were utilized the most. All authors also made use of qualitative data from a wide range of primary sources from feminist and Black civil rights leaders and activists. The diverse evidence base of each author demonstrated how the Black Power Movement and Black Panther Party can easily be studied in an academic setting. This research paper concludes with the argument that the Black Panther Party and Black Power Movement should continue to be studied from multiple interpretations.
