Presentation Title: "Risk Factors for Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder"

Abstract:

There has been an increased number of incarcerated individuals who have been diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. ASPD is a mental condition that can be characterized by a disregard for the rights and emotions of other which can often lead to troublesome behavior. In some cases, individuals with ASPD can get involved with the justice system through violent or aggressive actions. This literature review of research explores the potential risk factors that contribute to justice system involvement for individuals diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, with particular attention to the influence gender has on differential behavioral and legal outcomes. Large quantities of people were not given the right treatment to manage their ASPD, and one potential factor could be gender roles in who gets referred for treatment of their symptoms. Although many people who have ASPD come in contact with the system, not every person does. This research may determine what the possible factors are that put someone more at risk for becoming justice involved, as well as how gender may influence that possibility.
