Abstract:

My finalized poster topic is the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), infertility, and preterm birth. This topic connects directly to the course unit on reproductive health and prenatal development, particularly the theme of how biological and environmental factors influence pregnancy outcomes. BMI is a measurable indicator of body fat that can significantly impact hormonal balance, ovulation, and overall reproductive functioning. Research shows that both underweight and overweight individuals may experience higher rates of infertility, as well as increased risks during pregnancy, including preterm birth. By exploring how maternal health before and during pregnancy affects fetal development, this poster highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy BMI as part of preventative care. Overall, this topic aligns with the broader course theme of how physical health, lifestyle factors, and biological systems interact to shape development across the lifespan, beginning even before birth.
