Presentation Title: "OUI Within Drugs and Alcohol"

Abstract:

Alcohol and substance use are declining for both males and females in the United States; however, female OUI arrests remain disproportionately higher for women compared to men (White 2020). This presentation describes my observations of OUI arrests during my internship with the Maine State Police in Cumberland County, Maine. I discuss my internship experiences and how they relate to the research on gender differences in operating under the influence levels, law enforcement practices, ride-hailing patterns, and other factors that can explain women’s disproportionate rates of OUI arrests compared to men. My internship observation and current research suggest that innovative private and public interventions could be used to reduce women’s rates of driving under the influence and subsequent arrests.
