Presentation Title: "S.N.A.P. and the Importance of Government Programs"

Abstract:

During the fall 2025 US government shutdown, many government assistance programs for marginalized Americans were at risk for defunding and subsequent abolishment. One of the most well-known and far reaching of these entitlement programs is SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), a food safety net program serving millions of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and hunger. Negative political messaging and misguided public perception that this program is rife with fraud or is ineffective continue to loom as a continuing threat to funding and support to this essential program designed to improve health. In response to these threats and subsequent governmental actions, this honors project was designed to counter argue unsubstantiated, damaging beliefs and actions by conducting a thorough review of the literature in order to offer the scientific evidence and statistical proof that the SNAP program is in fact, effective in improving the nutritional status of at-risk Americans living in poverty.
