Presentation Title: "Streets of Minneapolis: A Protest Song of the Moment"
Abstract:
Though best known, of course, for his groundbreaking rock and roll sound, Bruce Springsteen has also repeatedly shown an appreciation of and aptitude for Americana and folk music. Carrying on the tradition of idols like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, Springsteen has worn the mantel of protest singer throughout his career. In January 2026, Springsteen was appalled by the events unfolding in Minnesota. He immediately set to work writing a protest song titled "Streets of Minneapolis." By exploring the song's lyrics and musical accompaniment we will see how it fits into the American folk tradition.
