Presentation Title: "Study and isolation of the bacteriophage virus MadMo57"

Abstract:

Phages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria and so are safe for biological research. Phages recently have gained notice as potential therapeutics for difficult to treat bacterial infections. The current work focuses on phage MadMo57, isolated using the soil bacterial host Arthrobacter globiformis 2979 by the Biology 101 honors section in Fall 2025. MadMo57 was isolated from a soil sample in a swampy runoff near Petrocelli Hall collected in Rindge, NH, USA. It forms 2-3 mm plaques on a lawn of A. globiformis. This fall, the phage has been purified and grown to a concentration of over 108 phage units per milliliter. MadMo57 is being submitted to the Pittsburgh Bacteriophage Institute for their collections. Next, the phage will be characterized by sequencing its DNA and analyzing the genes using a range of bioinformatics software. These analyses can provide information about basic microbiology, as well as how phages function in killing bacteria.
