Presentation Title: "The Devastating Effects of Kidnapping"
Abstract:
The case of Elizabeth Smart is an example of child abduction, media influence, and victimization in the United States. In 2002, she was kidnapped at knife point and held captive for nine months, enduring severe violent victimization. In this presentation, the case of Elizabeth Smart will be used as an example to discuss the risk factors and consequences of child abductions using what is known in existing research. It will also explain the phenomenon of “Missing White Woman Syndrome” which states that cases of missing white females are overrepresented in the media compared to other individuals. In this presentation, the case of Elizabeth Smart will be used to demonstrate the accuracy of the risk factors as well as the consequences suffered by her, her family, and society. This paper explores the broader implications of child abductions including law enforcement responses, community involvement, and societal perceptions of victimization. The media’s role in shaping public opinions and influencing investigative efforts is critically examined. Ultimately, the case of Elizabeth Smart indicates the need for equitable media coverage, and enhanced support systems for survivors and their families.
