Abstract:
This is a presentation on the Global Irish Studies Certificate program at FPU through the lens of a student about to complete it. The presentation highlights my progress in the program, what I've accomplished, what I’ve learned studying abroad, and what I’m gaining through my internship. I’ll also discuss the opportunities GISC provides for students interested in the program or those already enrolled. Studying abroad in Belfast, NI, shed light on Irish History and intergroup relations and divided societies, and allowed me to view the Troubles in Ireland in the context of other divided groups and societies. This knowledge-base also includes the polarized environment we now find in America. Furthermore, I will share an update on my current internship as a research assistant with Professor Mary C. Kelly and Professor Séamus Pender. My fieldwork includes primary and secondary research on Irish-American history, and a “job-shadow” with Professor Kelly as she develops a new book project. Overall, the Global Irish Studies Program was partly what brought me to Franklin Pierce University, and as a graduating senior this year, I reflect that the program opened up valuable avenues in my personal and academic growth which I am happy to share with the FPU campus community and encourage others to pursue for themselves.
