Presentation Title: "Lessons Learned from Criminal Justice Internships: Working with Justice Involved Individuals"
Abstract:
This group presentation explores the key lessons learned from criminal justice student internships in law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities, and the court system. The internship experiences provided students with valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of engaging with vulnerable individuals, offenders and others affected by the justice system. Students will discuss the realities of working in criminal justice agencies. Topics will include effective communication strategies, ethical considerations, the impact of systemic barriers, and the importance of trauma-informed care. By reflecting on these experiences, we aim to highlight the areas of needed justice system reforms, best practices for future professionals, and fostering a deeper understanding of how to support justice-involved individuals in meaningful and transformative ways.
