Presentation Title: "Systematic Racism and Wrongful Convictions"
Abstract:
This presentation explores how wrongful convictions in the criminal justice system stem from systemic racism. Going all the way back to when slavery was abolished and the creation of the 13th amendment, my analysis considers the sociological impact it had on African Americans. This study dives deep into the historical realities such as Jim Crow laws and the War on Drugs and examines how they contributed to the overwhelming statistics of African Americans being wrongfully incarcerated. Real cases of people who were incarcerated unjustly, such as Walter McMillian and Korey Wise from the Central Park 5, are analyzed to show how the American justice system is failing. Ultimately, the potential solutions to solving these colossal problems are acknowledgement and education. To conclude this presentation, I will discuss education systems across the U.S without critical race theory, as well as the predominance of standing confederate statues in our society. By educating and bringing light to this subject, the central aim of my project is to make people think deeper about what is currently happening in our society today.
