Presentation Title: "Take Me on a Trip": Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man""
Abstract:
Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan is recognized as one of the most important and influential songwriters of the 20th century. During his long career Dylan has explored many musical styles (folk, rock, country, and gospel) but it is his lyrics that have captivated both casual and scholarly listeners. A true poet, Dylan's unparalleled imagination is on full display in 1965 composition, "Mr. Tambourine Man." This talk will focus on the power of and need for a poetic muse, in this case the titular Tambourine Man. During the presentation, attendees will learn more about writers who influenced the composition, as well as Dylan's technique, including his use of internal rhyming and present participles that lend the piece a sense of urgency and make it a song of movement. Often characterized as a drug-induced ode, "Mr. Tambourine" can more accurately be seen as a trip towards self-realization or even salvation, Dylan's long-desired and ultimately illusive goal.
