Presentation Title: "The Resistance, Adaptation, and Survival of Northern Cheyenne Women: How Northern Cheyenne Helped Navigate the Post Civil War Period"
Abstract:
This research paper studies how the Northern Cheyenne women resisted, adapted to, and survived the rapidly changing political landscape of the United States during the post-Civil War period. The Northern Cheyenne women are followed through the Sand Creek Massacre (1864), the Battle of Little Bighorn/Greasy Grass (1876), and the Northern Cheyenne Exodus (1878). These events reveal the increased violence Northern Cheyenne women faced, how they protected their tribe in times of battle, and how their perseverance led to the creation of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Montana. Treaties between the United States and the Northern Cheyenne, U.S. Senate sessions, and firsthand accounts from members of the Northern Cheyenne tribe are used to help understand the motivations of the United States and Northern Cheyenne during this time period. In addition to analyzing the changes of the Northern Cheyenne women throughout this fourteen-year period, the changing role of Native American women facing colonization is also examined.
