Presentation Title: "The Vrba-Wetzler Report"
Abstract:
The Presentation Vrba-Wetzler Report presents the escape of two Slovak Jews, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, who escaped from Auschwitz in 1944 and co-wrote a detailed report of the concentration camp, providing a rare eyewitness account of the extermination camp to the outside world. The Vrba-Wetzler report was one of the earliest and most comprehensive reports of death tolls, gas chambers, camp organization and prisoner's daily life, including the descriptions of inhumane treatment and murders of thousands of Jews. This presentation examines the response of the allied governments, the Jewish community and the Red Cross to the report and their hesitancy to accept it. It concludes with an evaluation of the report´s impact with the emphasis on the fact that the report provided testimony in the Nuremberg trials in 1945.
