Presentation Title: "Can India effectively harness its soaring population and become a true global economic superpower?"
Abstract:
This research will explore the potential for India to grow into a true global superpower.
The central measure and area of evaluation for this question will revolve around the
country’s economy and its growth. Only in the past year has India overtaken China
for the most populous country in the world, this research will identify what barriers
stand between India and parlaying this huge population into economic dominance. India’s
growth has the potential to replicate the ascension to power seen from China in the
previous century, the country is poised to rise up amongst the other major powers
of the world. The country’s ability to provide jobs to its ever-youthful population
is one of the leading questions which India’s government must address. While its population
growth is skyrocketing, India’s ability to produce formal employment for millions
of its citizens has struggled to keep pace. Additionally, India has among the world’s
lowest levels of women in the workforce, with only one in five being employed formally.
Promoting pathways and altering traditional rhetoric surrounding women in the workforce
must also be a focus for the Indian government. Capturing a global industry which
India pioneer should also be of top priority.
