Presentation Title: "Natural and Cultural Resource Inventory Project for the FPU Rindge Campus"
Abstract:
Through decades of student and faculty research and class work, as well as anecdotal observations of wildlife and other natural and cultural history phenomena, we have amassed a critical amount of information about the 1200 acres of FPU property. This information is critical for future planning and management decisions. Unfortunately, these data are spread out in many locations and formats. Working with students in the Environmental Science Junior Seminar class and volunteers, we are attempting to archive the old data in one accessible location. We have scanned and uploaded old reports, and are beginning the process of interviewing FPU and local community members about specific natural history observations and events, which will be added to the NRI database. This database will be accessible to the public. Students will use Geographic Information Systems to map many of these observations and events. Anyone who has observations, photographs or measurements of specific plant, animal, fungi or other species, historical or archeological sites, specific natural events (floods, ice storms, hurricanes, lake ice-in or ice-out, etc.) is welcome to offer their information for archiving and mapping into the NRI database.
