Presentation Title: "Gun-Related Deaths in the United States and their Correlation to the Household Gun Ownership Percentage"
Abstract:
About 40% of Americans report that they or someone who lives in their household owns a firearm. Overall, although the United States holds only 4% of the world population, about 40% of all civilian owned guns around the globe are owned by Americans. This presentation describes an analysis that examines the relationship between homicide rates, suicide rates, and the overall gun death rate to the percent of household gun ownership in the 50 US States. The findings suggest a complex relationship between the presence of guns in US states and the various types of deaths that are related to gun use. This analysis is limited by the lack of a national registry for gun ownership and an unknowable quantity of illegal guns in the United States. I will discuss some possible explanations for the patterns shown in the data and suggest implications for reforms to gun policies and criminal justice practices.
