Presentation Title: "Health Insurance and the Correlation to Juvenile Crime"
Abstract:
Youth with mental health disorders are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system.
At some points of contact as many as 70% of youths in the system have been found to
have diagnosable mental health disorders. The relationship between youth mental health
and juvenile justice system involvement is complex. In our research project we explore
whether the size of the youth population who are uninsured is correlated with juvenile
crime rates in US states. We found relationships between health insurance coverage
for youth and some types of juvenile delinquency. In our presentation, we will discuss
what our results suggest for healthcare policies and practices.
