Presentation Title: "Training Law Enforcement to Respond"
Abstract:
Law enforcement is increasingly being called upon to respond to difficult mental health situations in which they may not be properly trained. This proposed study aims to examine the preliminary data on whether crisis intervention and co-responding programs are perceived by Rhode Island police officers as more effective in responding to mental health service calls. Results from previous studies have found that jurisdictions that employ these training programs have seen a decrease in the number of arrests, amount of force used, and time spent on each call.
