Healing the Divide: An Interdisciplinary Symposium on Healthcare Disparities
Join us on Friday, October 4, 2024 for the inaugural Pappas Symposium entitled Healing the Divide: An Interdisciplinary Symposium on Healthcare Disparities. The symposium will be held at Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) / BioFabUSA in Manchester, N.H.
Franklin Pierce University is proud to be hosting this symposium due to the generous financial support of the Arthur M. and Martha A. Pappas Foundation.
We invite any member of healthcare team who is passionate about addressing care disparities to attend and/or submit a presentation proposal. Some examples of such team members include:
- Physicians
- Physician Assistants
- Nursing Professionals
- Physical Therapists and Assistants
- Dietitians
- Healthcare Facility Administrators
- Podiatrists
- Occupational Therapists
- Social Workers
- Mental Health Professionals
- Health Professions Students
We also encourage community organizations who support or advocate for vulnerable populations, and industry experts with relevant products to consider hosting an information booth at the event.
The schedule for symposium is still being finalized, however we have provided a tentative schedule to assist in your planning.
Friday, October 4:
7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.: Registration and Light Breakfast
8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.: Morning Sessions
10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.: Networking and Vendor Booths
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: Keynote Speaker
12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.: Lunch (included) and Awards Ceremony
1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Afternoon Sessions
4:15 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.: Networking and Poster Presentations

We invite nominations for the following awards, which will be presented to recipients during lunch at the Symposium.
Inaugural Arthur M. Pappas Visionary Leader Award
Recognizing a healthcare professional with greater than 10 years of experience who has exemplified the vision of Dr. Pappas through:
- Collaboration in the spirit of enhancing patient-centered care
- Commitment to service of community and profession
- Passion for advancing the care of vulnerable patient populations
Inaugural ‘Emerging Leader’ Award
Recognizing an early-career healthcare professional with 5 or less years of experience who has exemplified the vision of Dr. Pappas:
- Collaboration in the spirit of enhancing patient-centered care
- Commitment to service of community and profession
- Passion for advancing the care of vulnerable patient populations
To nominate a colleague, please submit a letter of nomination to describing how the nominee fulfills the award criteria, along with the nominee’s CV, to pappas@franklinpierce.edu.
In addition, during the awards ceremony, one graduate student will be recognized with an award for the best student poster, as determined by a review committee. The recipient will be determined based on quality of submission abstract and written poster. Authors must be students at the time of submission.
Nominations are due by 11:59 p.m. on August 15, 2024. Award winners will be notified by September 2, 2024.
We invite submissions for podium and poster presentation proposals. Proposal submissions will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary team to select for inclusion in the symposium. Successful proposals will highlight an interdisciplinary approach to care of patients facing healthcare disparities, for example, rural populations, patients with substance use disorder, patients with food our housing insecurity, care of LGBTQIA+ patients, or other vulnerable populations. We invite primary research presentations, as well as educational sessions, highlighting novel approaches to care or education of health professions students.
Proposals should be submitted to pappas@franklinpierce.edu and should include the following:
- Cover Page inducing session title; authors names, credentials and institutional affiliations;
primary authors contact information.
- Submissions will be blinded for peer review by removing the cover page from the submission. Only the conference organizer will have access to this information during review.
- Session Title (10 words max)
- Description (50 words max)
- Learning Objectives (200 words max).
- Abstract (400 words max)
- Relevance to an interdisciplinary team (200 words max)
- Statement of Qualifications of author(s) (100 words max)
- Please do not provide identifying information here.
Accepted presentation proposals will receive up to two complementary symposium registrations for authors.
Proposals are due by 11:59 p.m. on August 15, 2024. Selected presenters will be notified by September 2, 2024.

- Bronze ($200): Includes vendor table from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 4.
- Silver ($350): Includes vendor table and company logo printed on attendee handouts and event materials.
- Gold ($500): Includes Bronze and Silver items, plus company logo and website link on event webpage.

This program is not yet approved for CME credit. Conference organizers plan to apply for 6 AAPA Category 1 CME credits from the AAPA Review Panel. The total number of approved credits is yet to be determined.
