For their special report on “Meeting the daunting challenges of today's college presidency,” the editors of The Chronicle of Higher Education reached out to a handful of America’s college and university leaders, including Franklin Pierce University President Kim Mooney, asking them to weigh in with their thoughts on the evolving presidency, posting the question: “Is it an impossible job?”
The presidency is possible, says Kim Mooney, president of Franklin Pierce University,
“if you embrace collaboration, accept imperfection, and accommodate emotional ricochets.”
“The details and clarity offered in a president’s vision provide a destination to move
toward, but the methods and outcomes along the way will be far messier than described."
On any given day, she says, “a range of issues unfold for a president’s immediate input or direct management. Some
represent the truly urgent and others the seemingly absurd — sometimes all within
minutes of one another.”
