The Franklin Pierce University community gathered to celebrate its 15th Annual Academic Showcase on Tuesday, April 16, highlighting the scholarly and creative pursuits of students, faculty, and staff. The much-anticipated tradition took on the theme of “Transitions” this year, marking a poignant moment as President Kim Mooney ’83 prepares for her retirement at the end of June.
The day kicked off with remarks from President Mooney to a gathered crowd in Spagnuolo Hall, her words resonating with the pride and optimism that have characterized her tenure. Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Jean Dawson, Chair of the Academic Showcase Committee, expressed gratitude towards the students, faculty, and staff whose relentless dedication makes the showcase a highlight each year. In a significant announcement, Dr. Catherine M. Paden, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, announced the creation of the Kim Mooney Presidential Prize for Best Poster or Presentation in honor of her contributions and enduring support of Academic Showcase. Inaugural winners Briahna Bouchard '24 and Patricia Egan '24 won for their presentation "Food Choices and Nutritional Status of Franklin Pierce Students”.
The event featured an array of presentations that spanned diverse disciplines and interests, from the explorative "The Camino as Classroom: Walking to Santiago as Our Semester Abroad" to the analytical "Health Insurance and the Correlation to Juvenile Crime." The day was also filled with engaging sessions including a Faculty Research Lightning Round, the intellectual challenge of the Brain Bowl, hands-on activities like Seed Planting, and even a lively Rock Band performance.
This year's showcase not only highlighted the scholarly and creative prowess of the University community but also embraced the bittersweet reality of transition, celebrating the past while looking forward to the future. As the University prepares for new leadership, the spirit of innovation and collaboration continues to thrive, setting a promising tone for the years to come.
