Jan 28, 2014
The Franklin Pierce University Department of Athletics announced that 194 of its student-athletes
were placed on the department’s Academic Honor Roll by earning grade point averages
of 3.2 or higher during the recently completed 2013 fall semester. Among the 194 honorees
were 20 student-athletes who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs.
“Once again our student-athletes have proven that they are not only standouts in the
athletic arena, but also in the classroom,” Director of Athletics Bruce Kirsh said.
“We continue to do a better job of monitoring student-athletes’ academic programs.
Coaches are demanding that student-athletes spend more time in study halls under their
supervision, and the coaches and student-athletes also work closer with the academic
supportive services that the university makes available to all of its students.”
The student-athletes who earned 4.0’s included Matthew Wojciak (baseball), Stephen
Whyte (men’s ice hockey), Gabriel Carter (men’s track & field), Mark Choiniere (men’s
track & field), James Willette (sprint football), Brooke Coderre (women’s basketball),
Mary Quinn (women’s rowing), Morgan Caisse (field hockey), Francesca Cartee (field
hockey), Samantha Bureau (women’s ice hockey), Noelle White (women’s ice hockey),
Jamie Wiley (women’s ice hockey/softball), Caroline Savasta (women’s soccer), Jannice
Sundqvist (women’s soccer/track & field), Christine Boulanger (women’s tennis), Kelsey
Devlin (women’s track & field), Jackie Price (women’s track & field), Sandy Maliangos
(volleyball), Natasha Ray (volleyball), and Catie Swiderski (volleyball).
Seventy-one of the 194 honorees were freshmen going through their first collegiate
classroom experience last fall. In addition to the first-year students, 57 sophomores,
27 juniors, 37 seniors, and two graduate students helped comprise the list.
“We are also recruiting and maintaining better student-athletes because of the reputation
of our regional and national athletic programs,” Kirsh continued. “Many of our new
student-athletes over the last couple of years are enrolling in the new health sciences
program which has strong requirements; students in that program are coming better
prepared.”
Women’s track & field led all female sports teams with 19 student-athletes on the
honor roll, while six other women’s sport teams earned double-figure honorees including
women’s soccer (16), softball (14), volleyball (12), women’s ice hockey (12), field
hockey (11) and women’s lacrosse (11). All women’s teams on the Rindge campus experienced
incredible academic success in the fall, as each female squad posted a team-wide GPA
of 3.0 or higher.
Men’s track & field and baseball were one and two in total number of honorees on the
honor roll with 17 and 16, respectively. Men’s lacrosse (13) and men’s ice hockey
(12) were the other two male programs to earn double-digit totals on the list.
Other teams represented on the Academic Honor Roll included men’s cross country (8),
sprint football (9), women’s rowing (6), men’s soccer (9), men’s tennis (4), women’s
