Bernie Sanders Holds Town Hall Event at the Rindge Campus

Despite snowy conditions throughout the region, more than 500 people attended the Bernie Sanders Town Hall on the Rindge campus on Monday, February 10, the day before New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary. Local speakers included students Eleanor Gagne ’22 and Brianna Gilman ’20,who warmed up the crowd in advance of speeches by Nina Turner, national co-chair of Sanders’ campaign and a former state senator for Ohio, and Cynthia Nixon. Nixon, an actress best known for her role in “Sex in the City,” and a political activist, introduced Sanders to a spirited crowd.

Upon taking the stage, Sanders spoke about corporate taxes, health care, education, crime, gun control, racism and immigration. Numerous media professionals from the major networks and news organizations, including the Associated Press and the Washington Post, covered the event. ABC’s affiliate in Maine, WMTW, interviewed four Franklin Pierce students at the Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication to get their thoughts on the presidential candidates. (Randomly selected in the moment, the students included two Democrats, an Independent and a Republican voter.)
Dr. Kristen Nevious, Director of the Fitzwater Center, has orchestrated a non-stop schedule of opportunities for students to engage in the New Hampshire primary process through Politics FitzU, Pizza & Politics, the Franklin Pierce/Boston Herald/NBC10 polling partnership, and the Primary Mock Election livestream hosted by Franklin Pierce and NHPBS. Franklin Pierce tudents will continue to participate in events and media opportunities as the road to the White House heads toward the party conventions and the November 2020 election.
