The campaign trail through Rindge is heating up as the February 11 New Hampshire primary approaches. With less than two weeks to go, Pizza & Politics hosted Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign surrogate John Lynch, former governor of New Hampshire, and Democratic candidate Deval Patrick, former governor of Massachusetts, for informal conversation with Ravens and Rindge community members.
Governor Lynch shared his connection with Franklin Pierce through his enduring friendship with former Franklin Pierce President Walter Peterson and his wife Dorothy, who both served as campaign managers for Lynch. Lynch told the audience he is supporting Biden because the former Vice President is trustworthy, because he has empathy, and because he can get elected with a coalition of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. Lynch was one of Biden’s earliest supporters, but when asked if he would support whoever wins the Democratic nomination he answered with a resounding “YES.” |

Governor Deval Patrick spoke on campus the following day, sharing his “origin story” growing up in poverty on the South Side of Chicago, and his eventual success steering the state of Massachusetts from the 2008 financial crisis to top ranks in the nation for student achievement, healthcare coverage, energy efficiency, veteran services and entrepreneurial activity. Speaking of the other Democratic candidates, he said, “We all have a slew of great ideas. I have results.”
As the candidates now shift their focus from Iowa to New Hampshire, the coming days will bring more campaigns and political discussion to the Rindge campus. It’s a great time to be a Raven!
