Honors for Franklin Pierce University Professor
Dec 12, 2013

Dr. Joshua Cleland, a faculty member in Franklin Pierce University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in its College of Graduate & Professional Studies at its Manchester Center has won the distinguished Rose Award for the second consecutive year. This national award recognizes the best research article of the year in Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
Dr. Cleland’s article entitled “Manual physical therapy and exercise versus supervised home exercise in the management of patients with inversion ankle sprain: a multicenter randomized clinical trial,” was published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Ann Greiner, interim academic program director-NH, said, “Dr. Cleland is truly a gifted scholar, deserving of this award. He inspires both his colleagues and students alike with the quality of the research that he conducts in a ‘real world’ manner. He works with clinical colleagues locally, nationally, and internationally to establish quality research projects, which result in publications that are informing the physical therapy community globally on best practice for musculoskeletal treatment interventions.”
Franklin Pierce University operates the only DPT program in the state of New Hampshire; the University also offers a DPT program at its Goodyear, Ariz., campus. Dr. Greiner commented on the research opportunities that Franklin Pierce students and the community experience through Dr. Cleland’s example: “Students at Franklin Pierce’s DPT Program in New Hampshire have been inspired to conduct pilot research projects and write case reports that have been accepted for publication. Colleagues at Concord Hospital are conducting and publishing research where Dr. Cleland practices clinically. He mentors his Franklin Pierce colleagues both in New Hampshire and Arizona in their scholarship agendas, as well as aspiring scholars who are completing doctoral studies. Dr. Cleland has earned the respect of the international physical therapy community and is a spectacular asset to Franklin Pierce University through his exceptional teaching, service, and scholarship.”
Dr. Cleland will be accepting the Rose Award in February in Las Vegas, Nev., at the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Sections Meeting.
