“Half the Sky” Event on Rindge Campus: Documentary Screening and Discussion Focus on Empowering Women Worldwide

Franklin Pierce University is hosting a “Half the Sky” event at their Rindge campus in Spagnuolo Hall from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the general public.
The “Half the Sky” event features a free screening of the first hour of the PBS documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. The film is based on a book of the same name by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, which has inspired a “Half the Sky” movement. The movement’s goal is to ignite the change needed to put an end to the oppression of women and girls worldwide, which includes decreasing violence against women, increasing economic and educational opportunities for women, and improving healthcare around the world.
Before the film, Kate Barry, a Master's degree candidate at the School for International Training, will speak briefly about her work with the women of the Isecheno Women's Conservation Group in Kenya. Barry’s work will highlight how these Kenyan women have found ways to reduce their negative impacts on the rainforest and create jobs. After the film, there will be a discussion about how to help with this project and other ones that address the issues featured in the film.
The “Half the Sky” event is funded by Franklin Pierce’s Office of Academic Affairs and organized by its Women in Leadership & Environmental Science Program. Any donations collected during the event will be given to the Isecheno Women’s Conservation Group in Kenya.
