Franklin Pierce University Observes Constitution Day

Students, faculty, staff and candidates for political office gathered in the DiPietro Library courtyard on Tuesday, September 17 for a meaningful reflection on the rights and responsibilities conferred on American citizens by the U.S. Constitution. President Kim Mooney began by reading the Preamble to the Constitution. Readings followed from the first amendment which guarantees the right to assemble, speak and worship without coercion; the 13th-15th amendments which abolish slavery and protect the rights of former enslaved people as citizens; and the 19th and 26th amendments which protect the rights of women and young adults.
The importance of using those rights to engage in our democratic process was underscored by readings from speeches by John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, John McCain, and others. At the conclusion of the readings, representatives for the campaigns of Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, the nonpartisan group No Labels, and the Cheshire County Democrats and Republicans held informal conversations and passed out literature. The personal flavor of New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary season and unique political process was on display.
