Earth Week Keynote Address: Sustainable Food and Community Supported Agriculture

Earth Week (April 16-22) will be celebrated at Franklin Pierce University with a variety of events. A highlight of the week will be the Keynote Address—Sustainable Food and Community Supported Agriculture— delivered by Tracie Smith, Manager of Tracie’s Community Farm, LLC.
Tracie has been growing food for the community through the CSA model. She operates a farm in Fitzwilliam that boasts more than 300 CSA members and offers spring, summer, and fall shares. The farm stand sells local goods and “starts” grown without the use of pesticides or chemicals for gardeners, wholesale produce for restaurants, and vegetables and local goods for community members. The farm works with local food pantries and families in need to supplement the cost of their shares through the Share Care Fund. Franklin Pierce is excited to welcome Tracie to its Earth Week activities as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts. The university has made a commitment to climate neutrality and is working on a number of actions:
- Making environmental responsibility part of the University curriculum; increase interdisciplinary teaching about sustainability
- Reducing the environmental impacts of campus operations
- Protecting FP-owned wildlands; increase opportunities for low-impact outdoor recreation
- Creating a “green building” for environmental science and related fields.
There are fun and educational events every day of Earth Week on the Franklin Pierce campus that students and the community are invited to attend. Help with a proposal for a community garden on campus, see the premiere of a student film on recycling followed by the documentary Plastic Planet, participate in a trail clean-up, come to the Sustainability Fair , fly a recycled green Frisbee at the spring carnival, or go on tours of local recycling and renewable energy sites; these are just some of the events planned for the week—check out the schedule and become part of it!
