Presentation Title: "Alternative Medicine Practices"
Abstract:
Alternative medicine has become increasingly popular in the United States with evidence demonstrating increased effectiveness of these treatments. With the cost of Western healthcare increasing, practicing and understanding the benefits of alternative medicine is essential. Numerous alternative treatments can help with chronic disease and are cost-effective. Alternative medicine is also important to Americans because it allows them to have agency in their treatment through mind-body connection practices. Alternative medicine treatments are in some circumstances as effective or even more effective than medications being advertised by big pharmaceutical companies and doctors. Alternative healthcare treatments reviewed and described in this project are acupuncture and tai chi. The effectiveness of acupuncture treatment in recovery from stroke has been shown to improve neurological symptoms, daily activity, depressive symptoms, and pain. This research will also demonstrate the effectiveness of tai chi in reducing blood pressure in patients with prehypertension. These traditional Chinese medicine treatments can have a great impact on American society for pain management, reducing blood pressure, and improving overall quality of life. As the popularity of these treatments increases it could be possible that more doctors recommend traditional Chinese medicine treatments over Western medicines. This may result in decreasing costs and side effects.
