Presentation Title: "Concussions in Athletes"
Abstract:
Concussions are a highly important concern regarding athletes. More specifically,
regarding their potential long-term consequences such as mild Traumatic Brain Injuries
(mTBIs) or even Chromic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), in more extreme cases. This
study dives into the finer details on the effects of concussions in athletes, focusing
on the differences in potential outcomes on not making a full recovery before returning
to play. Through a broad and thorough analysis of research and case studies of CTE
and mTBIs, it is evident that everyone may experience these injuries quite differently.
This can be proved in various factors such as age, past head trauma, or even genetic
susceptibility. These are the most common influencers for the outcome of the injury.
Overall, the study highlights the criticality of ensuring athletes recover fully before
returning to their sport, as repeated injuries or elevated activity with an mTBI may
increase the likelihood of permanent damage or worsening the injury completely. This
research contributes to a better understanding of sports management protocols and
how significant it is for coaches, healthcare workers, or athletic trainers to prioritize
the safety of all athletes.
