Presentation Title: "Dorm Heating I: Is There a Problem with Climate Control in the Rindge Campus Dorms"
Abstract:
This project focused on the following questions: Is the temperature in the Rindge Campus Dorms uncomfortable for residents during both the warm and colder seasons? How hot do the dorms get when both the doors and windows are closed? For many years, during both the warm and cold seasons, students on Franklin Pierce campus have complained about uncomfortable temperatures in their dorm rooms. Some open windows while others may adjust the thermostats that don’t always work. Last spring, the Institute for Climate Action conducted a survey on student perceptions of temperatures in their dorm rooms. Complaints described in this survey stemmed from outdoor temperatures above 85 degrees or below 55 degrees. Approximately 50% of those who responded to the survey claimed to be uncomfortable when the temperatures were above the 85 degree benchmark. On the other hand, only 28% of the respondents were uncomfortable during the winter season. To get quantitative data about the situation, temperature sensors were placed in rooms on all four floors of the Mount Washington dorm on the east facing side this being due to this side having the greatest percentage of windows open. Temperature data were analyzed and compared to the survey results.
