Presentation Title: "The Effects of Inclusive Pedagogy on Statistics Performance and Perception"
Abstract:
Increasingly educators are re-evaluating their teaching practices when dealing with students’ changing needs. These needs include equity gaps, students’ emotional wellbeing, and increasing engagement and learning among students in higher education. Focusing on these needs may make education more evolutionarily consistent by giving students more autonomy, natural consequences, and being less authoritarian. In this research, two practices were examined to determine their effectiveness for student learning: flexible dates and the resubmission of assignments. These changes were made to allow students more autonomy in their work – lowering stress and allowing them the opportunity to do their best work. Additionally, these changes should allow them to work around other challenges in their lives that may cause them to miss work in class or perform poorly and to “level the playing field.” Data was collected from students in statistics for behavioral sciences courses before and after the implementation of the new practices. Under the new system, students’ exam performances were higher. Students also rated the instructor as more effective and the course easier overall. This type of strategy may be an effective way of improving students’ self-motivation and feelings of control in their learning.
