Presentation Title: "Geneva Conventions: Change in War Behavior"
Abstract:
This poster will explore different aspects of the Geneva Conventions. From some preliminary research, the Geneva Conventions have put in place the wartime protections for civilians, soldiers, and others such as medics and nurses. They were written because Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman was horrified by the battle scene between France and Austria in 1859 (Solis, 2006). After going back to Geneva, he called up some Swiss businessmen for a meeting (Solis, 2006). Dunant wanted the protections for wounded soldiers and civilians, and sixteen nations attended the conference, as the United States and Britain wrote the first convention in 1864 (Solis, 2006). The central questions I am trying to research are why the Geneva Conventions came to be and how have these influenced behavior in wartime? This poster aims to research the effect this has had on behavior in war and if states who agreed to these laws have been compliant.
