Presentation Title: "How Are Jobs in the Fossil Fuel Industry Being Affected by Renewable Energy? "
Abstract:
As we make the transition to renewable energy, the workers of the fossil fuel industry must be considered. Worldwide, this industry supplies 32 million jobs. The goal of the research was to determine how exactly the fossil fuel industry is being affected by the transition to green energy. Through the research, I found proposed plans to aid fossil fuel workers in a just transition. Regardless of plans, many fossil fuel workers have still lost jobs because of the renewable energy transition. Older workers lacking a college education are far more likely to either transition to another “dirty” job rather than learn a new skill set or become fully unemployed. As of now, renewable energy has become stigmatized to fossil fuel workers because of the lack of an actual just transition. With the talk of a renewable energy and just transition being new, it is hard to fully know what will happen to many fossil fuel workers with plans in place. For further research to be done, we must transition further into renewable energy to know what the fate of fossil fuel workers will be as well as what we must to do aid them to prevent unemployment.
