Presentation Title: "How does social media affect eating habits and weight in adolescents?"
Abstract:
Adolescents in this digital age have become obsessed with social media which is shaping their lives, perceptions, behaviors, and diet. The impact of social media on adolescents ranges anywhere from body image to eating habits. Social media is a big part of everyday life, making it difficult to escape social norms. This is a very important topic since childhood obesity has been described as a “pandemic” in the US and obesity places children at risk for a host of medical issues.
Overweight adolescents have a higher chance of becoming overweight or obese adults, living with impaired physical function and, multiple social and psychological issues. Stigmatization and low self-esteem are common in adolescents with obesity, and most do not realize they have obesity.
To examine the effect of social media on adolescents' eating habits and body image, a selection of literature was reviewed. Most concurred with each other, indicating the adverse effects of social media on food behavior and body satisfaction in adolescents. Four scientific papers were used to learn more about this topic, all written by qualified nutrition researchers, helping to clarify how social media has a negative effect on food behavior and eating habits in adolescents, leading to obesity.
