Presentation Title: "Mental Health Treatments for University Students"
Abstract:
Depression and anxiety have increased in university students over the last decade. Some of this increase has coincided with the COVID epidemic but even with this decreasing there are still significant challenges. With this increase in challenges, there has also been increased attention to opportunities for prevention and treatment. There is so much information on the internet about the “best mental health treatment” It can be overwhelming. Evidence actually proving the effectiveness of these treatments is hard to find. The goal of this work is to review the evidence base for effectiveness of treatments for these mental health disorders. Informed consent describing the positives and downsides of different treatments is also crucial. Opportunities for treatment include but are not limited to medications, therapy, and alternative methods of care including exercise. There is also much debate regarding the benefits and harms of online versus in-person treatments. It is common knowledge that everything affects everyone differently. The goal of our healthcare system should be to provide the most clear-cut and available information so that people can make the best treatment decisions for themselves. Information will be presented on each of these areas of mental healthcare being provided.
