Presentation Title: "The Step-By-Step Process of Replicating A Native American Ceramic Pot"
Abstract:
This Native American ceramic pot recreation project explored the various techniques used by Native Americans to create ceramic pottery. Native Americans have been creating and using ceramic pots for around 3,300 years for storage and cooking. This study began with the examination of recovered artifacts from a Native American archaeology site in Manchester, NH with pieces dated between 1,000 - 2,000 years ago. Aspects of the pottery reviewed included texture, color, style, and type of clay. The step-by-step process used to create a replica Native America ceramic pot followed the coil construction method, which involves rolling the clay into numerous coils and then using their fingers along with a wooden paddle to connect the coils, shape and smooth out the pot. After allowing the replica pot to dry, it was fired in kiln set at a lower temperature than modern pottery standards to replicate setting the ceramic over an open fire as the Native Americans would have done.Return To Schedule
