Presentation Title: "The Heart and Changes with Myocardial Infarction: Prevention and Treatment"
Abstract:
The heart is the major circulatory organ in the body. This allows the circulation of essential elements and nutrients to all other structures in the human. With age there are many possible pathologic events that can occur to the myocardium. The most common event that is life altering is myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction occurs due to build up of atherosclerotic plaque as humans age and is influenced by a multitude of risk factors. Some of these risk factors include hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, tobacco use, obesity, diabetes, and sedentary lifestyle. Many of these risk factors are modifiable and the tools to modify these risk factors are increasing in number and effectiveness. This literature review will address the pathophysiology of cell death during myocardial infarction and the role that the mitochondria play. Traditional western medicines, lifestyle modification, and herbal medicines will be discussed as potential modifying factors in the development of heart disease.
