Women's Empowerment Month at Franklin Pierce University
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women
are the exception.” ― Ruth Bader Ginsburg
“Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming
it, she stands up for all women.”― Maya Angelou
Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Michelle Obama. Margaret Sanger. Rosa Parks. Marie Curie. During Women’s Empowerment Month, we come together to celebrate women like these who embody the spirit of achievement and endurance. This undertaking is massive because women’s contributions to society are innumerable and far-reaching; women throughout history have fought oppression and made a difference. Yet we know that there is more fighting to do. So, during this month, we also dedicate time to understanding the societal factors that have limited (and continue to limit) women, trans, and non-binary people’s opportunities to be enfranchised, powerful members of communities the world over.
Although we have made strides toward liberation and equal treatment of all genders, women, trans, and non-binary people continue to experience oppression. Across the globe, they live under laws restricting their opportunities and conduct, even down to their clothing choices. Stories about women like Masha Amani, an Iranian woman arrested for wearing her headscarf “improperly” and who died in police custody, remind us that there is still work to be done. No matter our gender identities, it is incumbent on all of us to carry the spirit of Women’s Empowerment Month beyond March 31st. We need to continuously celebrate inspiring women, but more importantly, we need to proactively create opportunities for all women, trans, and non-binary people to be empowered all the time. Empowered to move through the world with a sense of safety. Empowered to make decisions about their health and bodies. Empowered to speak up about injustices they and others experience daily. Empowered to take action against those injustices and affect change.
